How to search

You can search for businesses and community groups by entering one or a few relevant words in the "enter your search words" box at left.

Make sure you use full words, rather than just the first few letters – for example, you won’t find vermicelli by searching with “verm”.

Suburbs
Choose from the suburb list to limit the results of your search to either a single suburb or a single region (north, south, east, west or central). The suburbs available are those approximately within a 30 kilometre radius of the centre of Brisbane.

Names and categories
By default, your search will look for matches in both the organisation name and the category (associated products or services). However, you can restrict the search to matching names or categories only, by de-selecting the checkbox under the suburb list.

Ways to improve your search

  • If you know the name of the organisation you’re looking for, un-check the “search categories” box
  • Enter one general word and one or two specific words to return more useful search results
    Example: “car wreckers holden”
  • Avoid searching with very general words only
    Example: “service”, “suppliers”, “equipment”
  • Force the Directory to return listings with or without a particular word by putting a plus (+) or minus (-) symbol in front of the word
Example: “photograph +wedding -equipment” should return a list of wedding photographers, but not photographic equipment suppliers.

Don’t worry about:

  • upper and lower case
Example: “dogs”, “DOGS” and “Dogs” will all return the same results
  • the order of words
Example: “dog cat” and “cat dog” will both return the same results
  • different word forms, plurals or endings
Example: “singing” will return the same results as “singer” and “singers”. Note, however, the “vermicelli” example above still won’t work because “verm” isn’t a word on its own, while “sing” is.

Working with search results

Search results will be displayed in a table showing:

  • organisation name
  • suburb
  • product or service category
  • listing features (email address, website and location map).

Up to ten listings will be shown on screen at once. To see more listings, select the “next page” and “previous page” links at the top-right of the table of search results.

Re-ordering search results
The most relevant listings for your search will appear at the top of the list. You can re-order the search results by:

  • organisation name, in alphabetical order: select the “name” link at the top of the list
  • suburb, in alphabetical order: select the “address” link at the top of the list

Switching to “browse by category
You can find other relevant listings by choosing a category from the search results list.

Each listing belongs to a product or service category (some listings may belong to two or three). Select the name of a category beside a listing to view all listings in that category.

You can browse all listings in a category, or search again within that category to further refine your list.

Browsing the directory

You may browse the Directory by product or service category. Select the “Browse” link underneath the search box to begin “at the top”. Each category can then be viewed by selecting its name.

As you browse deeper categories, links are shown above the category list. Use these links to backtrack and find other categories.

At the lowest category level, all Directory listings within a category will appear in a list similar to a “search results” list. Select a listing to view its details.

Search within category
You can search for listings within a given category at any time by using the search box at the left of the screen. A “search within category” check-box will appear in the “search” area (left side of the screen) when browsing a category.

Leave that box checked to restrict your next search to listings in the specified category.

Un-check the box to perform your next search across the entire Directory.
